Why Are We Doing This?

Food Insecurity

food in·se·cu·ri·ty
noun
noun: food insecurity

the state of being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. "more than 800 million people live every day with hunger or food insecurity as their constant companion"

In 2018, Jennifer and Jane identified that the area of Digby NS was one of the most food insecure in West Nova Scotia. The statistic of 1 in 3 people being food insecure was stagering. They knew they needed to do something.

In May of 2018, they held a public meeting to gauge if there was enough interest in doing something about it. They results were heartening. Participants from over 24 organizations and the public attended. A plan was starting to form.

In the Fall of 2018, Isabelle and Judy wrote a proposal to the Halifax Mobile Food Market(HMFM). HMFM was offering to mentor one group in Nova Scotia. The Digby proposal was accepted!

Additional funding (grants) was obtained from the Digby & Area Community Health Board and the Nova Scotia Health Authority.

The Action Team met biweekly through the winter/spring and we started collaborating with Julia Kemp & her team from HMFM. Additional Stakeholder meetings were held throughout the year and a plan began to form.

The decision was made to run a pilot project for 21 weeks with 9 market days in 2019.
